It’s no surprise that Sporting Kansas City is struggling this year. What is a surprise is that much of the difficulty has been on the defensive end. Too many times Sporting has given up late goals that led to ties or even losses. Under manager Peter Vermes, Sporting has always been strong on defense.
Never was that more true than when Matt Besler was manning the back line. Besler wasn’t flashy as much as he was dependable. He was always in the right place at the right time to be the hero. After the game, he would usually deflect the praise and talk about the contributions of his teammates.
Let’s be honest: it feels good to be a hero. Who doesn’t like to be lauded for what you do, especially if you do it really well. At the same time, it’s also humbling because you know there’s a responsibility that goes with being a hero.
Besler handled it perfectly.
